Leaving Salzburg

The bakery is stocked for a busy day a head, but...

The streets are empty this time in the morning.  Why are we up walking around?

To listen to the Glockenspiel, of course!  I couldn't come here with hearing them play.

It's a bit foggy this morning with a little touch of rain, but it won't matter where we are going.

We got all dressed up for this occasion.

Can you tell where we are?

We are underground in a salt mine!

We even crossed over into Germany and back to Austria while underground!

Our tour guide was quiet impressive as he spoke in German, English, and Italian every single time he said something.  However, it seemed like each time he spoke, he talked longest in German and shortest in Italian.  We weren't sure if he was quite repeating everything.

We are heading back to Frankfurt, Germany as our plane takes off tomorrow morning.  We are not sure what these plants are, but they look really interesting.  My only guess was beans, but it just didn't look right to me.

Salzburg, Austria

Yep...we are in Salzburg!  The bakery window is fully of bread shaped like musical instruments!

A view of old town from the bridge.  The Salzach river is not very pretty.

A couple of fountains we saw walking into old town Salzburg.

Taking the funicular up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

You can see all of Salzburg from the Fortress with this panoramic photo.  The earliest parts of this fortress was built in 1077..  It is the largest, fully-preserved fortress in central Europe, according to the Salzburg tourist webpage.

Brandon might be afraid of getting close to the walls, but not me!

This is the view from where the cannons were sticking out.  You can see all of old town Salzburg from here.  The big green dome is the cathedral.

This room has been destroyed several times, but in 1994 they discovered these "ruins" that are from the early 12th century.

Brandon with a cannon.

These ruins were discovered  under the fortress and are from 364 to 375 A.D.

Really old dice!

A model of the fortress and how it was built.

Now, THAT is what I call a gun cabinet - look closely.

They put on concerts here in the evenings.

The old main quarters with "modern" toilets!  Well...indoor at least!

Look at this ceiling!

A horn!  WOW - they have changed a lot since then!

These instruments just look really cool!

Brandon is slightly taller than they were back then.....

Punishment if your vice was gambling.

Views from the highest point of the fortress.

This mechanical organ was built in 1502.  It was played everyday at 4 AM to signal tot he towns people to get up and it would be played again at 7 PM to tell them to go to bed.

This is a picture of the St. George Cathedral in the fortress.

Yum!  Best pretzel I've ever had!

Selfie with Mozart!

The streets are narrow and full of people and vendors.

Most of the shops here are VERY high end shop.  We thought my Mother-In-Law would really appreciate this shop.

This is the kitchen in Mozarts' birth home.

Mozart's violin

Mozart's pianos.  This is where I learned that I wasn't suppose to be taking pictures...opps!

The fortress in the background.  The tower in the left is the glockenspiel and the green dome on the right is part of the cathedral.

A spray painting street artist.

The Salzburg Cathedral is stunning.

Just look at all of the details!

Multiple organs!

Artwork on the ceilings.

This baptismal font is from 1321 and is older than the cathedral!  Mozart was baptized in this font.

Brandon enjoyed the quietness and all of the artwork here.

Catacombs beneath the church.

More artwork on the ceiling.

Well, we can tell we have been on vacation for a long time, we're slowing down, so we thought we'd take the sights in with a horse drawn ride.  Our guide didn't speak much English, so I'm not even sure what everything is that I took pictures.  Bear with me!

The fortress.

A cool statue.

Another cool looking church.

Gargoyles.

Moss covered church.

The carriage left old town and went right out on the main streets!

Our horses!

The Residence Platz.

Another statue.

A bridge with locks on it  You put your intials on it for every lasting love.  I just wonder how often they have to go through and cut locks off!

A church across the river.

Brandon wanted a real Austrian dinner tonight.  I won't complain, it was great!

A nice shot of old town Salzburg.

I don't know how this system works, but the trolley buses some how get all over town with this huge mess of wires!

To get to the parking garage, we had to drive down this road.  In the middle of the day, it become pedestrians only.  In the picture on the right, you can see posts out of the ground.  Those sink into the ground when cars can drive through here, and then come up when they can't.  Once again, cars can go anywhere they fit, this just makes it so they can't fit during certain pa
